We all want to be happy. We all want to feel loved, appreciated and respected. It’s a human right that should never be tampered with or taken for granted. Our goal in life is to seek meaning in all that we do, and part of our God-given mission entails finding purpose, helping others as best we can and being the best human beings we can be.

But all that is much easier said than done. Total fulfillment, especially in the area of work, career, and business, is a myth. The majority of people alive today are not fulfilled by what they do for a living. The rat race is a long, hard road to nowhere and many have lost the will to live because of it.

There is no secret to happiness. There is no guaranteed system or failproof formula. While there are methods, principles, and habits that will put you on the right path to being happy, none of those can actually create happiness for you.

“If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help someone else.” – Ancient Chinese Proverb

Rule Number One: Be in the moment

Be present. Be fully aware of where you are, what you are doing and how important this moment is for you right now. Being alive is all about appreciating life, this minute, this second and being grateful for the fact that you get to breathe!

Rule Number Two: Understand it is better to be loving than it is to be right

Loving others is the ultimate key to peace of mind and self-fulfillment. It is impossible to give (or forgive!) unless you love first. Do a better job at showing compassion and love to others, and stop focusing so much on being right all the time.

Rule Number Three: Be a spectator of your own thoughts

…Especially when it comes to your emotions. In other words, become more self-aware and love yourself more. No one is perfect. We all have tough days when negative thoughts parade through our minds. That’s okay. What we need to get better at is channeling those thoughts and learn how to navigate the negative emotions into positive ones. Journalling is a great habit that can help you with this.

Rule Number Four: Be grateful for one thing. Every day.

Every morning, before you get out of bed, thank God for another day and pick one specific thing you are intentionally grateful for. It could be the weather, it could be your spouse, children or even your dog. Whatever it is, say thank you and repeat this habit daily.

Rule Number Five: Be of constant service to others.

If you truly want fulfillment in life, help others. Volunteer, give to charity, speak to people, give out valuable advice for free, do something people cannot pay you back for and you will reap infinite rewards. There is something captivating about serving others. It gives you perspective, it humbles you and it challenges you to always see the bigger picture.
